Log Cabin Quilting Books

Here is a complete collection of all log cabin quilting books currently in print. They are geared toward quilting enthusiasts - both newbies and accomplished quilters - and feature wonderfully imaginative patterns and detailed instructions for creating various sizes of log cabin quilts. Hopefully you can find one that will help you learn how to make your own log cabin quilts.

Log Cabin QuiltLog cabin quilts are pieced quilts featuring blocks made of strips of fabric typically encircling a small centered square. Dramatic contrast effects with light and dark fabrics are created by various layouts of the blocks when forming a quilt top. The Log Cabin block generally uses three different colors. Traditionally the center square is red, symbolizing the hearth.

The log cabin quilt block begins with a center fabric square which is surrounded by fabric strips called logs. The logs are joined to the block in a circular fashion starting with shorter logs and working out to the longer ones. Log cabin quilt design variations include: using larger and fewer logs; incorporating a court house steps layout with logs sewn to the block on opposite sides rather than in a circular fashion; using many different fabrics - giving the quilt a scappy look; varying the width of the logs and giving the illusion of curves; and utilizing triangles, diamonds, hexagons, or other shapes.
