Home and career classes are the most basic type of life skills training that we as teachers can have available for our students. Classes in Foods, Nutrition, Money Management and Sewing help students practice necessary math skills by giving them practical tangible experience to which they can easily relate. You can tell a child about the rules for dividing a square into equal pieces, but when that child can have the opportunity to slice a pan of brownies into equal portions for his classmates, he is actually holding the answer to the math problem in his hands. These classes help students have hands-on experiences with measuring, adding, subtracting, and working with money.
Home and careers courses also supplement Science, Language Arts, Social Studies as well as encouraging writing and reading skills. For children to be well- rounded, self-sufficient human beings, they need to know the nutrients that keep them healthy, how to be good consumers, the best ways to be financially savvy, how to cook for themselves, and yes, how to sew a button on a shirt!
I developed the concept of this website to give teachers and parents some ideas for utilizing Home Economics – based themes with their children. Each category can be clicked on to find information and other related websites to help students enjoy learning and to encourage a variety of learning styles.
